Green Township is more than just a quiet rural corner of Sussex County; it is a community defined by its preservation of 19th-century history and its commitment to a low-density, pastoral lifestyle.

1. Geography & Environment

Spanning roughly 16.5 square miles, Green Township is characterized by a "ridge and valley" landscape.  

• Landscape: The terrain features rolling hills, limestone outcroppings, and expansive wetlands. Much of the land remains dedicated to active farming (corn, hay, and livestock).

• Waterways: The Pequest River is a major natural feature, winding through the township. It was historically vital for the mills that powered the local economy.

• Preservation: The township maintains a strict "Right to Farm" ordinance and utilizes an Open Space Trust Fund to prevent over-development.

2. Deep History & Cultural Landmarks

Established in 1824, the township’s history predates its official incorporation, with indigenous sites at Shotwell Farm and Dark Moon dating back thousands of years.

• The Lackawanna Cut-Off: One of the most significant engineering feats in NJ history, this massive rail line runs through Green. The Greendell Station was a major stop; while currently inactive, there have been long-standing discussions about restoring passenger service to this corridor.  

• The "Yellow Frame" Church: Sitting high on a ridge, this historic Presbyterian church (built in 1752, rebuilt in 1887) is a landmark that can be seen for miles. It serves as a symbolic gateway to the township.  

• Tranquility: This village earned its name following a peaceful resolution to a 19th-century dispute over where to build a local church.

3. Education & Community Life

Green Township offers a highly-rated, close-knit educational environment.

• Green Hills School: A single-building district serving students from Pre-K through 8th grade. It is known for small class sizes and high levels of parental involvement.  

• Newton High School: For grades 9–12, students are "sent" to neighboring Newton.

• Recreation: EverGreen Park is the township’s primary recreational hub, offering soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and a walking trail (EverGreen Trail) that connects to the County Connector Rail-to-Trail system.  

4. Demographics & Economy

• Housing: The market consists almost entirely of single-family homes, many on large acreage. There is very little commercial or industrial zoning, which keeps the "country feel" intact but results in a heavy reliance on residential property taxes.

• Wealth & Employment: The township is affluent, with a median household income significantly higher than the state average. Many residents are "super-commuters" who travel to Parsippany, Morristown, or New York City.  

• Government: It operates under a Township Committee form of government, where five elected members serve staggered terms and choose a Mayor from among themselves annually.  

5. Local Essentials & Infrastructure

• Public Safety: There is no local police department; coverage is provided by the New Jersey State Police (Hope Station). Fire and EMS services are provided by the all-volunteer Green Township Fire Department.  

• Transport: While there is no public transit within the town, Route 94 serves as the main artery, and Interstate 80 is accessible within a 10–15 minute drive.

• Vibe:There are very few retail stores or restaurants within the township borders. Residents typically do their shopping in nearby Newton, Andover, or Hackettstown.

Interesting Fact: George Washington's army famously marched through the township along the King's Highway in 1779, with a contingent of Continental Troops camping at the Nathaniel Hart Farm.
